Voices In the Tunnels: IN Search of the Mole People

I remember reading an interview with death tripping nihilist film maker Richard Kern in ‘Film Threat’ somewhere in the late 80′s, where he talked wanting to make a film about the vast legion of people living underground, in the subway tunnels and sewers of New York City. He referred to them as ‘The Worms’, because their skin had bleached itself white from lack of sunlight, and said that a few of them had gone crazy and taken to worshipping ‘Girly Girl’, one of Peter Bagge’s characters from his old comic book, ‘Neat Stuff’. He might have also mentioned that they’d turned into cannibals, like in that old Donald Pleasance movie, Raw Meat, although I might have just imagined that part. At any rate, I was in college for media production at the time, so of course, I got a camera crew together, and we spent a rather uneventful couple of weeks trying to film our own version of the Worm documentary here in Boston.
