Software Not To Be Selling In An Online Auction

Here’s something that every intrepid eBay seller of software should remember before listing various types of software to sell on eBay — you’re not allowed to sell just any ole software you take a fancy to selling. But do you how to tell which software is a no-no for listing on eBay?

Well, first off, try installing the software yourself before trying to sell it in an online auction. Doing so could give you a few clues about what the problem could be selling it on eBay. It might be pirated software; software which comes on recordable media, like on a CD-RW for instance, is probably pirated. And of course selling something like that is completely illegal even if it is hard to tell that it actually is pirated.

Be careful if there is no photograph that comes with the software or if the pictures look like they come straight out of a catalog. Also, if the price is unreasonably low and there isn’t any documentation or some kind of manual. If it is an authentic piece of Microsoft software, there will be an accompanying Certificate of Authenticity, so make sure that you check for that. Software that is available only via downloading could very well be pirated, but this is certainly not always the case.

There are some software developers that provide download licenses for their software so that it can be resold on eBay or other auction sites, like Big Value Depot. Go to Google or another search engine and type the name of the software in the search box. Click “Search” to go to the manufacturer’s site to see whether there is such a license, but remember that software you download probably does not have resale rights attached to it.

New software still in its pre-release version is refered to as beta software, and it is released for testing purposes by the people that make it. It’s rather unlikely that a software developer would give permission for beta software to be sold or even redistributed because it is never as good as the final product. You definitely should not buy beta-stage software, and if you are installing software and discover that it is a beta version, or if it says somewhere on the CD that it is for neither resale or distribution, return it as soon as possible.

There is software that is sold as a special educational edition or that has a student license, meaning that it has been designed so that students and teachers can afford it. This software can only be sold by people with an educational reseller’s license and if the buyer is an academic user. Academic software will usually indicate somewhere on the CD or during the installation what it is.

OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. OEM software should only be distributed with a new computer; it comes pre-installed on the computer. A license for OEM software usually only allows it to be sold when selling it with hardware at the same time. Look for something that says “For sale with new computer only” or a similar message. However, it is probably going to be okay to bundle any OEM software you have with a computer that you are selling online.

If by chance you end up selling software that you are not supposed to be selling, then eBay could possibly close your auction, or your customers might realize what they’ve bought and give you bad feedback. It just isn’t worth the trouble. Realize what they’ve bought and give you negative feedback. It’s not really worth the risk.
