Security Best Practices: Better than Firewalls
Don’t use antivirus & antispyware Tools exclusively! You’re kidding yourself.
It has become my opinion that firewalls and other programs running in the background of most computer systems cause as much trouble, if not more, than they help avoid. One of the primary reasons for this phenomenon is that the existence of these programs gives a false sense of security AND detracts from the harder work of educating people to the fact that best practices will help avoid as many viruses and spyware as any automatic program will avoid.

These programs also have a tendency to interact with other programs, and each other, in a negative fashion. When best practices are not followed average users install more spyware and antivirus scanners in addition to the ones provided by the original computer manufacturers which cause problems almost immediately. Then, you have dueling protectors

It is like calling in Batman and Superman but neither knows the other is there. They would suspect each others activities as nefarious and try to protect you from each other. They will clash, one might win, or they might continue to clash. They can clash in various ways also. They can clash in ways that is just a nuisance, or in ways that crashes the system. Either way, the primary purpose has been defeated, or, best base, added to the malaise, before any virus was even a threat.

Many programs claiming to be AntiSpyware, and/or popup blockers, are themselves a form of SpyWare. They’ll keep everybody else out while they feed on your system like a greedy parasite chewing up resources and slowing your Web experience to a crawl. Most of the ones who claim to be protectors are very careful not to induce illegal practices, such as credit card number theft, but more marketing data. Either way, they are a parasite that needs to be cut out at the head.

Best practices and use of third party services for such as Gmail or YAHOO, for email, antivirus.com (housecall.trendmicro.com), for spyware and virus protection, and non-Microsoft browsers and word processing software, such as Mozilla/Netscape and Open Office, are the only ways to guarantee safety and it is all free.

YAHOO and GMAIL have built in virus scanners to check all attachments. House call is updated many times each day. Non-Microsoft browsers are not usually even attacked, and they are not susceptible to the same types of attacks. Finally, one of the biggest security risks on your computer, the Microsoft Office products, are the last way attackers sneak in. It is exploits in automated features of these programs that leave you wide open for attackers. We are not saying that we recommend that you do not use these programs, but do not leave Microsoft programs as the default programs.

Below you will find a list of ‘Security Best Practices’ with all the links to all the places where you can quickly replace all these Microsoft products as the default system tools. REMEMBER, I am not saying not to ever use these Microsoft products anymore. Just don’t have them be the default program for opening files, spreadsheets, etc. The list is in alphabetical order, not priority, since ANY ONE element on the list that is not followed leaves you open for attack.
